Nkumburis Posted August 10, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2017 Good Evening, I was in an antique store last weekend and picked up some nice patches. 46 SF detachment, 7th Cav. Bullion patch, first sergeant rank, 103rd ID, 18th Airborne Corps variation patch and a weird variation on the 40th Division with an R in the middle of the sun. Feel free to comment and if anyone can help me identify the 40th Div. variation I would appreciate it! Thanks again and enjoy! - Nick K
vintageproductions Posted August 10, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2017 the 40th division is the reserve patch for them. Not 100% sure the 46th co. patch is original.
tredhed2 Posted August 10, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2017 The R on the 40th ID patch refers to the reserves- the sick, lame, under or overage personnel ineligible to ship overseas to Korea. The formed a reserve cadre and for awhile, there were two 40th IDs on the books.
firefighter Posted August 10, 2017 Share #4 Posted August 10, 2017 Great find. The 46th looks iffy, not digging it.What does the back of the 7th CAV look like.Ive never seen a bullion one before. That 40th Div Reserve is nice
KurtA Posted August 10, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2017 Based on that type of bullion border, the 7th Cav appears to be a Pakistani-made fake.

Nkumburis Posted August 18, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted August 18, 2017 Sorry for the delayed response gents, thank you all for your feedback. KurtA, I wasn't sure if it was a good piece or not but I didn't pay much for it so it was worth the gamble. Here is a photo of the reverse of the patches. Also the 18th is a manufacturer error which is pretty neat. - Nick K

Much rather pay a few dollars for something that turns out to be a fake than not pay a few dollars for something that turns out to be rare and valuable. (Only applies when the price is low and the seller doesn't seem to be overly well versed on the topic. ) Often times, knowledgeable dishonest sellers will "sucker price" fakes. If an original is worth $500, they'll price the deceiving fake at $150.
atb Posted August 18, 2017 Share #11 Posted August 18, 2017 The R on the 40th ID patch refers to the reserves- the sick, lame, under or overage personnel ineligible to ship overseas to Korea. The formed a reserve cadre and for awhile, there were two 40th IDs on the books. National Guard units federalized for the Korean War had units with the same designations organized in their respective states. These were designated as "NGUS" (National Guard of the United States). They were merged with their numerical twins when the federalized units reverted back to state control. My creaky memory seems to think the 40th SSI with an "R" is for a California state guard or state reserve unit and is not related to either of the CA the National Guard's 40th Infantry Divisions.
