Bodes Posted August 8, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2017 Forum members, I have a 3" inch round I purchased a few years ago.....It was marked as being a navy round when I found it.....It's an AP with green paint and has GMC (Gun Motor Carriage), 3 Inch, & 1943 stamped on the bottom.....Nothing stamped on the brass band.....Through my research, I found this round was used by both the army and the navy.....The navy using different normenclature than the army......I'm thinking this may be a projectile for the M10 Tank Destroyer....And if that is the case, what shell casing would be proper?.....The M26 76mm shell or one marked 3-inch, Mk.I M2 of Mk.II M2?.....Any help appreciated...Bodes
Bodes Posted August 8, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted August 8, 2017 Just to add, it also has "M 62" on the bottom....I see reference to an "M 62 A1", which is either same as mine, or a revised version....Bodes

pzjgr Posted August 9, 2017 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2017 You want the Mk II M2 (brass case) or M2B1 (steel case). These are identical to the Navy 3" 50 cal case...which can be used as a substitute, as finding the Army version is much harder in my experience. This is what you are looking for... Bodes Posted August 9, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted August 9, 2017 Thanks pzjgr, I believe that's correct for the M10 (wolverine) tank destroyer round?....Am I wrong in assuming however that the M26 brass could also be correct for the 76mm Sherman round?....I'm just curious because of the flexibility this would give me....Although so far, an M26 itself has proven elusive....Bodes
pzjgr Posted August 9, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 9, 2017 Yes, the M26 case would be used in the 76mm gunned Sherman, and the M62 projectile can be used in it, and was also used in the MkII M2 case. The MkII M2 case was only used in the M10 Tank Destroyer's M7 gun (other than Navy guns). So your projectile could go into either case...

Bodes Posted August 10, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted August 10, 2017 Thanks for the additional information Salvage Sailor......Doesn't surprise me the longevity of the 3" as a navy round...Seems to me, from what I've read, it tended to be more successful than as a tank round.....Bodes
pzjgr Posted August 14, 2017 Share #11 Posted August 14, 2017 Took a (admittedly bad) pic of some 3" rounds just for more info... Going from the left, the first one is a Navy 3" 50cal drill/dummy round, next is an Army 3" round for the M10, with the M79 AP Shot projectile, next a Navy 3" 50 cal APCBC-T round...these would be the type of case used by the M10... The next is a WWI 3" Field Gun Shrapnel round, and the final is a rare 3" 15 Pounder Model 1903 Coast Defense Gun, note the much longer case than the others. Hope this helps too....
