WWII PQMD Large Machine Engraved WIA PH Group

I grabbed this set recently because I had never seen an officially large machine engraved WIA PH before. The address label is tough to read, but it looks like the PQMD sent it overseas first, then it was sent back to a hospital, and finally to Camp Crowder MO where, presumably, the recipient finally got it. The date stamp at Camp Crowder is October 1945. I am usually pretty quick to sort out original owners...but I can't quite nail this guy down. The DUIs are for the 114th Infantry Regiment, which served in the ETO, but there was a PTO ribbon in the box too. These items came from the family, but tough to know what belongs with what. The 114th was a National Guard unit, so the DIs might be from pre war service.

I think this might be my guy, but am not sure yet...the state is correct, and the overseas dates roughly coincide with the 44th ID

Nice grouping. Great research, Kurt. Maybe Purple Hearts Reunited can get it returned to the family. Oh Wait! It came from the family! MY-O-My :)

Yes, in fact this PH is a case history in favor of the role that collectors play. The PH went to the vet's brother when he passed away in 1988. The brother recently passed with no other relatives, and the PH went to estate seller and now to me. There was no one left to "reunite" it with.

Im sure PHR could find a 5th cousin 3 times removed.

I think this record indicates 114th Medical Battalion, not 114th Infantry. I do not see Marko in the 44th Roster (though it could have something to do with him being POW) but if he were 114th Infantry I believe the NARA record would indicate the unit type blatantly as 'infantry' and not have branch immaterial/ band / dental /medical.

So I think you will have more luck finding him with 26th Division! I don't think I have rosters but I will check.

Thanks, although the DUIs in the group would be a real coincidence. From my experience with rosters, many were compiled at the end of the war. Men who left the unit during the war for wounds, capture etc are often not reflected. I requested his record, so hopefully it will shed some light.

I forgot about the DUIs - and based on his Pennsylvania record there his dates of foreign service line up with the 44th more so than 26th. 44th Departed the U.S. on 5 Sept....26th departed 27 Sep.

Sorry about that! Something really got me on the wrong track there.
