Jumpin Jack Posted July 26, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2017 Yes, it is original WWII sailor's cap. I believe, but not sure that the blue ring represents a trainee. This piece has eluded me over the years. Jack
KurtA Posted July 26, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2017 USNA plebes wear those. (even currently)

blitz67 Posted July 26, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted July 26, 2017 Perfect! I actually found two to the same guy, I thought it might be a cadet's hat. Thanks again! Brad
Dave Posted July 26, 2017 Share #6 Posted July 26, 2017 Oddly, at least through 2003, there was no JM Nielsen listed in the USNA register.
Cobra 6 Actual Posted July 26, 2017 Share #7 Posted July 26, 2017 Actually, NROTC also wore it. My uncle had one/wore one in the late 1940's at Villanova.

vintageproductions Posted July 27, 2017 Share #9 Posted July 27, 2017 These went nutty in the vintage clothing business a few years ago.
sigsaye Posted July 29, 2017 Share #10 Posted July 29, 2017 At one time or another, these were worn by every "First Year" Midshipman, NROTC, Naval Academy, what have you. Millions issued out, recycled year after year until worn out and tossed.

sigsaye Posted August 9, 2017 Share #12 Posted August 9, 2017 Maybe the guy washed out early. As I said in my earlier post, these hats were NOT just worn at the Naval Academy, but by the first year Midshipmen at every college and university that had NROTC. Not being on the USNA registry simply means he did not go to the USNA.
firefighter Posted August 9, 2017 Share #13 Posted August 9, 2017 One just sold on eBay for around $
P-40Warhawk Posted December 10, 2017 Share #14 Posted December 10, 2017 Nice hat I couldn't find a reserve officer with those initials in the 1944 register, if he was commissioned it must have been after 1944, maybe even into the 1950s? The hat is WWII, but no telling when it was worn.
hink441 Posted January 26, 2020 Share #15 Posted January 26, 2020 I know this is an old thread but I found one of these Dixie cups today. Never have come across one of these before. Anybody able to ID the name in the hat? Does the contract number provide a time frame for this hat? Thanks for looking.
