lakenormanusa Posted July 25, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted July 25, 2017 What is this on? It's on an Air Corps bracelet IDed to a female. I wanted to see if she may have been a WASP.
patches Posted July 25, 2017 Share #4 Posted July 25, 2017 Maybe S stands for Sweetheart a Sweetheart with her own serial number, a play on GIs serial numbers? Gracie is mentioned here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wibrown/moravian_cem.htm

Gracie is mentioned here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wibrown/moravian_cem.htm Maybe. I found what I believe is her Find A Grave memorial Unfortunately there is no service information pertaining to her or her husband on their markers. I have also sent her info to the WASP museum just to get their thoughts. https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=kuehl&GSfn=grace&GSmn=p&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=88306822&df=all&

kfields Posted July 25, 2017 Share #8 Posted July 25, 2017 hmmm... I looked in Paul Braddock's Book " Dog Tags - A History of the American Military Identification Tag". He has a list of prefix letters used but none that are " S ". Kim
lakenormanusa Posted July 25, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted July 25, 2017 hmmm... I looked in Paul Braddock's Book " Dog Tags - A History of the American Military Identification Tag". He has a list of prefix letters used but none that are " S ". Kim Thanks for looking. I couldn't find anything either. I may be totally wrong, but since WASP's were Women Airforce Service Pilots, I was thinking the S may represent Service Pilot. I sent a photo over to the WASP museum and they were interested. They forwarded it over to their archivist to research.
lettow Posted July 25, 2017 Share #10 Posted July 25, 2017 The Grace P. Kuehl in the findagrave listing was married to Fred O Kuehl, a medical doctor in De Pere Wisconsin. Her maiden name was Prahl and her middle name was Marie. So the identification seems correct. But I dont find any military service for either of them. lettow Posted July 26, 2017 Share #12 Posted July 26, 2017 Ancestry has a BIRLS record for Fred Kuehl showing service in the army from 6 Jan 41 to 5 Feb 42.
lakenormanusa Posted July 27, 2017 Author Share #13 Posted July 27, 2017 Ancestry has a BIRLS record for Fred Kuehl showing service in the army from 6 Jan 41 to 5 Feb 42. Since he was a Dr., I wonder if he served in a medical capacity. I'm still hopeful of finding out something about Grace. Maybe she had a brother in the Air Corps who made the bracelet up for her incorporating a false service number with the "S" representing "sister." Grasping at straws, but who knows. twining540 Posted July 27, 2017 Share #15 Posted July 27, 2017 It came about in 1942 and officially recognized by the military in 1943, also known as the Army Medical Specialist Corps.

I think that answers it. It appears it probably belonged to Fred from when he was in service. He completed medical school prior to being in the service. Grace had two brothers. I found no service record for either. Both died relatively young, one in 1947 (John) and the other in 1959 (Vernon).

As an Army Medical Specialist, would she have had an S prefix in her serial number? If qualified, maybe she was assisting her husband in performing physical exams for Air Corps recruits early in the war.
