1st ESB marked M1 helmet Liner with Fixed bail shell

Recently picked up this well worn Early war fixed bail and Westinghouse liner. The shell is pretty neat and has a very large area of brown overspray. It has a laundry code (P5020) Carved into it in several places. Also looks like the laundry code was painted on the inside but has since been scraped away. The liner has an early double wire sweatband but more amazingly it has the 1st Engineer Special Brigade blue half circle painted across the front as well as a small NCO bar on the back. Both markings have been painted over which is odd. Maybe a reissue since most of the laundry codes have been scraped away? The liner also has a lot of tape residue on the brim inside and out. Very neat set that I'm very happy to own, pretty amazing to think that this helmet could have been part of the D-Day invasion!

Enjoy!

Excellent helmet!

Very cool!

Any luck so far finding the owner with that laundry number?

Sadly no luck, that laundry code come up with over 30 matches. I searched the helmet and liner all over and couldn't find a name or anything. Also weird that the helmet has 4 laundry codes carved or painted and the liner has none, makes me think it's a set that was put together and reissued.

Actually it was not unheard of to paint over the arc/rank as some of these troops moved inland with the front. I have seen a few like this, the last one belonging to a vet in the 595th Military Police Escort Company.

Of course I would keep the set together as not every soldier marked both his liner and shell.

Pretty special helmet IMHO.

pat

I also owned an ESB Grouping that was overpainted in nearly the same exact way. As Pat said not all that uncommon and a great looking set.

For me the helmet has the 2 tone colour scheme often seen on the Canadian British camo nets , brown moving into a green

Very nice !

Thank you everyone for the kind comments, I'm very happy to own it and I will definitely keep it together just as I found it. I'll look it over again to see if there's any names!

Thanks again
