VMI88 Posted July 15, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2017 I picked up this Minie ball from a junk box at the Richmond Civil War show today. It has the basic shape of a standard 3 ring Minie but mics out at just over .50, maybe .51 or even .505. Does anyone know what this might be? It seems a little small to be used in a .54 Mississippi or Lorenz rifle but I suppose it could work. I found some references online to a .52 Confederate Minie that measures about .51, but no explanation what it would be used in. The pictures looked pretty similar to this. I also found pictures of a round for the .50 Colt Revolving Rifle that has a more pointed nose, but I'm sure there were variations. Any information would be appreciated. dag Posted July 16, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 16, 2017 I can't help. But you may want to check out bulletandshell.com. Lots of resources and forum with a lot on Civil War projectiles. I posted a few, very helpful.
VMI88 Posted July 30, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted July 30, 2017 Thanks for the tip. I read through their forum and it seems that .51 minie balls are generally accepted as being used in .54 weapons. I would have thought that was a little undersized but I guess not.
