DannyBMW Posted July 10, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2017 Hello, I have this "L" head flash light MX-991/U, that I purchase recently and although I've owned several over the years, I've never had one with the DA number "DA-23-072-AMC-217" factory highlighted in white on the side. This one is made by "BRIGHTSTAR" All the internals appear to be copper, not brass and the plastic body has a slight brownish hue to it as well. Any information as to time frame would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Danny
tarheeltim Posted July 10, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2017 I can't quantify it, but have always been told that Vietnam era flashlights can be identified by their not having protective guards on each side of the on/off switch. Those with protective guards are post-Vietnam. Perhaps another member can provide more specific information.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted July 16, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2017 In an older thread somebody posted an email from one of the companies that made them, the "wings" on the sides of the switch were added long after Vietnam, IIRC around 1980
USARV72 Posted July 16, 2017 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2017 The contract no is 1972. Never heard about the switch guards, go by the contract numbers. Have to dig mine out.
lucky52 Posted July 24, 2017 Share #5 Posted July 24, 2017 My Viet Nam flashlight is a gray Fulton MX 993/U, no switch protector and it is straight. No other marks on it that I can see.
phantomfixer Posted July 24, 2017 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2017 We used that flashlight in our USAF flight line tool boxes in Germany...mid 80s...supposedly spark proof/resistant?..still have one and works good
lucky52 Posted July 25, 2017 Share #7 Posted July 25, 2017 I lost the bulb retainer to mine somehow, the newer Fultons don't fit it.I don't remember if I had that flashlight when I went over there or I got it after I arrived(May 70).
Acadien359 Posted July 17, 2023 Share #8 Posted July 17, 2023 Danny, I have one of the same lights as yours [BRIGHT STAR, dark glossy OD green color with the white stamped number on lower end], and just picked up another, made by FULTON, same dark glossy OD green with MX-991/U on one side of angle [no US], and FULTON on the other side with AMC-193T stamped above. AMC stands for Army Materiel Command and my guess is that the ones marked as such may be early production examples from the early 60s. Just a guess based on comparisons with other types I've had over the years. Alan
