Gilt 'US' Insignia

I think this might be a WWI era piece, but I am not familiar with that time frame so I am not sure this is even the right place to post this. This came in a small box of WWII US Army collar brass, hat badges and pins. It is slightly larger than the standard officer "U.S." insignia, being 1-1/8th inches long. Can anyone help identify this? The catch is just an open "C" catch.

I think that is the type used by both enlisted men (before gilt collar discs were adopted) and officers on the dress blue uniform collars from the early 1900's.
