easterneagle87 Posted July 5, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2017 This just showed up on Letgo. What type of bag is it? Says it is an M1912 bag. They're asking $75. Location, New Albany, IN If I've bird dogged for a forum member, cool. Please post it on the forum if someone gets it.
teufelhund Posted July 5, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 5, 2017 Experimental Cavalry Mod 1912 horse Gas mag bag ( filters). Diverted from its original purpose by Medical corps and used as a backpack in order to contain medic supplies
atb Posted July 5, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 5, 2017 M1912 Ration Bags. Not for gas mask filters. No gas masks till WW1. Originally part of the M1912 Cavalry Equipment. The Ration Bags were used to carry the troopers rations and mess gear. They are convertable from the back pack as shown to a saddle bag configuration for transport on the horse. Many references available on these. The US Army Medical Department did adopt them for use as a haversack for its personnel to use with the medical belt in the field. jprostak Posted July 5, 2017 Share #4 Posted July 5, 2017 Well worth $
atb Posted July 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted July 6, 2017 Well worth $75 Yes, I forgot to add that. I have had a couple and they had Army Medical Department unit markings on them. I also have multiple images of Medical Department soldiers wearing these, but none that show cavalrymen using them. I think when the M1912 Cavalry Equipment was tested, some items were adopted, but the Ration Bags were not accepted for cavalry service.

David D Posted July 6, 2017 Share #8 Posted July 6, 2017 Beautiful example, Flage Guy. I've been looking for a 1917 dated example for months.
'Flage Guy Posted July 6, 2017 Share #9 Posted July 6, 2017 Thanks, David...that 1917 date was the only reason I went for these Bags, as I was already blessed with a mint 1918 rig, complete with Saddle ties. They don't show up near as often as the '18 Bags. That brought about a halfway decent Mounted web display, all dated '17...
