The "V" when used to designate USN or USMC squadrons stands for "heavier than air" or "fixed wing" depending on the era, as opposed to "Z" which meant "lighter than air" back in the day or "H" which now stands for "Helicopter". It was commissioned at Cherry Point on 15 September 1952 evolving from the former Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Counter Measures section of the Wing Headquarters Squadron.
