mvmhm Posted July 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2017 I recently acquired a grouping of artifacts from the 30+ year career of Brigadier General Edward Augustus Ferguson. BG Ferguson was commissioned in 1968 and served from that time until March 1985 in the New York Army National Guard. He then transferred to the Ohio Army National Guard, serving in Ohio until his retirement on 31 October 1996. BG Ferguson passed away in June 2003 and is buried a short distance from us at the Dayton National Cemetery. I don't normally buy stuff, but stumbled across this on eBay about 10 minutes before the auction ended; his widow is one of the board members of a historic preservation group that I also belong to. Here's his bio: RESUME OF SERVICE CAREER OF EDWARD AUGUSTUS FERGUSON, JR., Brigadier General, (ARNGUS) Retired effective Oct 31, 1998 YEARS OF COMMISSIONED SERVICE: Over 29 TOTAL YEARS OF SERVICE: Over 31 PRESENT ASSIGNMENT: Assistant Adjutant General for Training w/attachment to Commander, 73rd Troop Command, Columbus, Ohio 43217-5943 since October 1996 MILITARY SCHOOLS ATTENDED Transportation School, Transportation Officer Basic Course Academy of Health Sciences, Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Advanced Course Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defense School, Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defense Officer Course Command and General Staff College Academy of Health Sciences, Army Medical Department Theater Medical Operations (Reserve Component) Army War College, Reserve Component National Security Issues Seminar Armed Forces Staff College, Reserve Components National Security Seminar John F. mvmhm Posted July 1, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted July 1, 2017 With the exception of his Legion of Merit and the New York 10-year service medal, there are duplicates of all his awards...I'll be offering the dupes and extras in the For Sale section shortly...oddly enough, only one of his Army Achievement Medals is engraved with his name..I thought for sure the LoM would be named. atb Posted July 1, 2017 Share #12 Posted July 1, 2017 What Vietnam service do you suppose is reflected by his headstone (post #2)? No Vietnam Service Medal seems present.
mvmhm Posted July 1, 2017 Author Share #13 Posted July 1, 2017 This is kind of a sore point with me...his widow actually had these campaigns listed: VIETNAM, LEBANON, GRENADA, PANAMA, PERSIAN GULF, SOMALIA, KOSOVO. Her view is that since he was in the Army during those conflicts, they should "all" be listed on his marker (even though he never left New York or Ohio). The National Cemetery Administration limits campaigns/wars to two or three. In my opinion, you don't list anything you didn't actually go to...but I didn't say anything...if that's how she wants to see her husbands service, who am I to steal his glory?
