Pep Posted June 29, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 29, 2017 Another find up here in New Hampshire... This is a nice area to find early stuff at a reasonable price. What model is this one? Is it very common? My first round one...
Marchville1918 Posted June 29, 2017 Share #2 Posted June 29, 2017 It is a model 1909 canteen. Considering the 1910 equipment was adopted the next year I would assume it to be more rare than the earlier round canteen, but I have seen enough of them to think that they are not extremely rare. That one looks to be in nice shape with clear unit marks.
kfields Posted June 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted June 30, 2017 Are these the type canteens used by some of the first american troops who arrived in France in 1917? Kim
Marchville1918 Posted June 30, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2017 Could be. I saw a photo once of what was identified as American railway engineer troops who were among the very first because they built rail lines to the American training areas. In that picture they had Krag rifles and the early web gear that included these round canteens. It would be very rare in WW1. A lot of the National Guard troops on the Mexican border in 1916 had the early web gear with round canteens.

jprostak Posted July 1, 2017 Share #6 Posted July 1, 2017 I thought that the canteen shown, though marked 1909 is a Model of 1907. The Model of 1909 is the square looped Cavalry Canteen.
Old Marine Posted July 1, 2017 Share #7 Posted July 1, 2017 This photo postcard is supposed to be US troops marching through London in 1917. I don't know what model they are but you can see they have the old round style canteens.
