Trench Made Gas Alarm?

Hello everyone,

I was lucky enough to stumble across what I thought was some sort of field made gong today. The shell is completely undecorated and uses some sort of very old electrical or com wire as a suspension. The Shell is dated 1918. I thought it might be trench art, but as can be seen, this is very utilitarian. I have seen some photos of shells being used as gas alarms, so its not out of the realm of possibility. I would love some opinions on it. I found it at a flea market for only a few dollars, so it has no history or provenance. Any speculation is welcome

I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow of the bottom edge. It's a little deformed like something was rattled around inside.

More likely it was a wind chime. The use of empty artillery shells was done during the Great War as gas alarms, but I doubt yours was one of them.
