355fg Posted June 18, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2017 The Tin Fish Club was formed by Cadet Midshipmen of the Merchant Marine who were forced to abandon ship as the result of enemy action. This exclusive club only had a membership of approximately 400 survivors making this certificate quite a rare piece to find. Austin S. Ryan was aboard the SS Richard Olney when it struck a mine off Tunisia on September 22, 1943. Although the certificate has July 22nd for the date of the action, I believe this date was written in error. The only action for this liberty ship was on September 22, 1943 resulting in the loss of two crewmen.
