355fg Posted June 18, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2017 I collect these Army Air Force Citation of Honor certificates and have quite a few of them, but this one is worth sharing. These certificates were issued for Army Air Force personnel who died while in service, but were not combat related deaths. This is the first Citation of Honor certificate that I have found issued for anyone other than someone who died as a result of a plane crash in the United States. T5 Walter F. Matthias enlisted in August 1940 from Saginaw, Michigan. When war began he was serving with the 17th Pursuit Sq, 24th Pursuit Group in the Philippine Islands. He was captured when the Philippines surrendered and died of dysentery in a Japanese prison camp on July 2, 1942.
