I saw this sold for $400 last month on ebay. The listing said it was British made. Were all of the 87th ODB's British made?

Not ODB. Tan border. See your Jan-Mar 2007 Trading Post.

If someone paid $400 for this thinking it was ODB, well, P.T. Barnum was right. You can bet it was not an ASMIC member.

To answer your question, this is an English made insignia.

The English never produced insignia with a OD Border, the border will be Gold / Khaki in color. This is directly related to the shorted of raw material during the time period, hence English made insignia were produced with similar colors that were available on hand at the Tailor shop.

Seams someone wanted this insignia and wasn't going to let price stop them from purchasing it.

BILL THE PATCH

In all reality what is this patch really worth?, I've never seen a British made 87th before. They must be somewhat scarce?

I would say about $200. A 45th ID sold a few months back for $200 on ebay that was English made. The 87th tan/gold/khaki border is equally if not more rare. Definitely scarce.

To the buyer, it must have been worth $400. Maybe he was trying to complete his collection of WWII ID English made patches.

Careful using E-Bay prices as a guide. Unless you have trend data, one guy throwing in his wallet to win a bid war is not a good baseline. I don't think this patch is worth $200. Scarce, but it is still a divisional patch in the end. I think it is more in the region of $80-$90 max. Just my personal opinion of course as a collector rather than a dealer.

I have managed to get more than afew English made divisional patches over the years by just going thru alot of 'junk' bins. Might have payed $200.00 combined total for all of them. $20.00 maybe for one or two. If someone else was there and wanted it more than I did, I might have payed more. It really helps to learn what a tan/gold/khaki looks like -vs- a od border. This is a 'constant learning' hobby we have here. And yes, I have paid 'stupid' money for a patch I might have wanted.
