A. Who are they?

B. Where are they?

C. What year was this photo taken (within a year)?

D. Why were they there?

E. BONUS - Identify anyone else in the photo including the "big thing" in the background.

RULES: No googling, no wiki-ing, no lifelines. No cheatin'. You gots to just know these things without looking anything up. You're on the honor system. B)

Warning- Correct and complete answers may, at some later time, result in release of a kraken. Or at least another, previously unpublished, similar photo and some more words. Always more words.

And to those that only like seeing original photos from other guys’ collections but don't want to share their own pix — how about getting off the sidelines and scanning, sizing and putting up some of your photos in this subforum, particularly the fun ones that are unpublished or at least scarce. I know you're out there, since somebody is buying these things besides me and Dirk and Patches and a few others--- and makin' me pay mo' money for 'em. Sometimes. But not this time, since these were a lucky sleeper. Some youngster must have listed them.

So, even with watermarks and low resolution to keep the photos “yours”, people would probably rather see them than not see them. And sharing is fun. “Try it, you’ll like it!”

Happy Father’s Day to the Fathers out there. And to the Mothers out there, be nice to them this weekend. Cut ‘em some slack.

The one standing on far left looks like the actor Ward Bond and looks like that is John Ford in the middle in back, with sunglasses and ball cap.

I would guess that John Wayne is missing from the photo and this may have been during filming for Operation Pacific.

Good choice! I was hung up on 'In Harms Way', but of course that was a Preminger film.

John Wayne would be the third. They Were Expendable?

That's a Bingo on Duke---- The "third bad man". Good guesses, all, but we're still waiting for C and D to come in. And I can guarantee, the other guy in the shades is NOT Robert Montgomery, but I'm pretty sure he's one of Ford's Hollywood posse, probably crew. I'll post a close up of him later.

They Were Expendable was filmed in the Miami area. The present day Dinner Key Marina in Cocoanut Grove near the old CG Air station was one location, No Name Harbor at the south end of Key Biscayne was their remote PT base. The canal just north of there near the old Nixon summer white house had some of the scene when running close to shore., and the end scene is the Cape Florida lighthouse on the south end of Key Biscayne.

MastersMate and Bill the Patch-- negatory on They Were Expendable-- but a great Ford flick with Duke, Robert Montgomery, Bond and others from Ford's stock company. I didn't know it was filmed in Miami. I lived there in the 70's, graduated HS in Miami (My-ah-MUH' as the good ole boys pronounced it) Dade County and used to go sailing just about every weekend from Dinner Key on a friend of my dad's 41' foot Morgan sloop. Cruising around Biscayne Bay, Stiltsville, and getting as close to Nixon's Key Biscayne compound as we could without making waves. Fun times. Busch Bavarian never tasted as good at the end of a hawt day. I was always intrigued by the Pan Am China Clipper history of "Miami City Hall" at Dinner Key, that was once the air terminal for the commercial flying boats back in the glamour days of air travel. If those walls could talk.

Fun movie, but nothing to do with it.

Okay, a couple hints-

50's, making a movie but don't focus on Pearl Harbor. Some of you might recognize two standbys from Ford movies here, taken around the same time as my photo-

That’s it— 'Mister Roberts', released in 1955. John Ford’s son, Patrick, said he was “A lousy father … but a good movie director and a good American.” So, as Father’s Day 2017, winds down, here’s the second, unpublished photo from Submarine Base Pearl Harbor (with I believe a Tang-class sub in the background) of a man who was probably called a “son” or even a “mother” by many more people than ever called him a “father”. John Ford, if nothing else was an American original. It’s doubtful that any of today’s TV-raised, film school-bred directors will make movies and lead lives interesting enough to reach legendary status, as Ford has, more than 40 years after his death in 1973. Also in the picture is Ward Bond (1903-1960), who along with John Wayne (1907-1979), were Ford’s two most loyal and reliable actors from his “stock company”. Together, they were “Three Bad Men”. Jack Pennick (1895-1964), that you correctly identified driving the jeep in the picture above, was pretty "bad" too. Pennick was a Marine stationed at the Peking Legation in 1912, a year after the "Last Emperor" and served in the Marine Corps during WWI. He entered the movies as a military adviser for “What Price Glory?” and went on to appear in many of Ford's flicks. Pennick re-enlisted in the Navy in WW II, serving under Ford in the Office of Strategic Services field photo unit. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart during the North African campaign. Besides Pennick and Harry Carey, Jr., who died in 2012 and was the last surviving member of Ford's stock company, other credited players in 'Mr. Roberts' included Martin Milner, Nick Adams, Ken Curtis (Festus from 'Gunsmoke'), Tige Andrews (Lt. Greer from 'Mod Squad') and surfing legend, Duke Kahanamoku.
