VenitHora Posted June 15, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 15, 2017 Here is a uniform I have had for some time and thought I would share it. I have not seen too many of these EM blues and always enjoyed seeing the ones people had in their collections. This one is a privately tailored medical uniform and has the medical piping on the jacket, hat and pants. Everything including the belt came together and the jacket is named and dated 4/12/41. Does anyone have any information on when and for what reason these uniforms were worn and how widely they were used?

Martinjmpr Posted June 15, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 15, 2017 Wow, that's interesting - not an expert on blues by any means but I've never seen an SSI on a blue uniform jacket. The branch-color chevrons and the branch-color stripe and the trousers is also very interesting. Maybe the soldier was part of a ceremonial honor guard or something? Justin B. Posted June 16, 2017 Share #6 Posted June 16, 2017 Does anyone have any information on when and for what reason these uniforms were worn and how widely they were used? How widely they were used is "very rarely!" They came in around 1938, were optional for purchase at the wearer's expense, and since they were not required, they wouldn't be officially prescribed for any occasion. So normally they were worn off-duty. During the Depression, understandably, it seems that few enlisted men spent their money on the blues. I agree, it is even more rare to see a SSI on one of these coats. The only other I recall was an Air Corps uniform posted on this site. Having the cap, coat and trousers all together is like hen's teeth. Very, very nice. Thanks a lot for the photos! Justin B.
VenitHora Posted June 17, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted June 17, 2017 Thanks for the comments and information! Yes, I remember seeing an EM Air Corps uniform here as well but almost all of the blues I recall seeing are officer ones. Does anyone have any pictures of these EM Blues in use? Here is a closer up of the pants, it came with what I believe is a civilian white belt still attached. Justin B. Posted June 17, 2017 Share #10 Posted June 17, 2017 More great photos, thanks! Does anyone have any pictures of these EM Blues in use?Very scarce. Here's one at Arlington, cropped from a picture I posted in this thread: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/282433-ww2-army-dress-blues/ Kind of hard to see, but my guess is the master sergeant was acting as escort to the British sergeant-major, so he wouldn't be in formation with other troops and could wear the blues.
