Edelweisse Posted June 11, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 11, 2017 Hi Folks: I recently purchased my 1st helicopter pilot helmet SPH-4 at a local estate sale. I guess it was a spur of the moment...and when I picked it up..the estate sales rep told me that it came with the flight bag under the table which contained gloves, sleeve guards, helmet manual, cable, etc...small parts. The bag and helmet is named to a US Army Colonel that served in Vietnam and Germany along with USA. After purchasing the helmet and researching the name...I'm honored The helmet and bag are "named"....and the helmet is contract dated 1971 (DSA-100-71-C-1457)

viking73 Posted June 12, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 12, 2017 Nice named grouping and a great pickup! Thanks for sharing the pictures. Hope you got it for a decent price, I know estate sales can be hit or miss. -Derek
mohawkALSE Posted June 13, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2017 Helmet is a earlier SPH from 71 as the contract shows and was updated a few times into the 1980s. The retention assembly (inside part with the chin strap that holds the ear cups) was updated to the more modern SPH type with the dual snap chin strap (3d Gen chinstrap). Helmet was also modified for use with the cutaway PVS-5 NVGs as you can see with the velcro strips on the visor housing, surgical tubing strap and the counterweight bag on the rear. Nice piece!
