mvmhm Posted June 8, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 8, 2017 We've got a guy who's been brining in a lot of Warsaw Pact stuff (28 boxes so far)...today though he brought in his Father's things...his Dad was Private Wilbur O. R E D M O N, who served in the 1536th AAF Base Unit in Hollandia, New Guinea in 1944 and 1945, and ended the war with the 1539th AAF BU at Atsugi, Japan in September 1945. He returned to the States in November 1945 (he kept a small Red Cross diary with his locations). The group includes his uniform with insignia, extra badgers, paperwork etc...AND this very nice Type 99. If my eyes are functioning properly, it's a Nagoya Series 3. It's my first non-ground rifle, but it also has the winged sights, cleaning rod, monopod, and the dust cover. The stock is much redder than it looks and there are only a couple very minor dings. The only flaws are a missing handguard screw and one of the fold down sight wings. Numbers match. The son said the rifle has been hanging from a basement rafter since his Dad returned; he was never allowed to hold or play with it, although his Dad would sometimes take it down and let him look. The mother passed awy not too long ago so he's clearing things out. Dad was born in 1915, but died just before his 50th birthday in 1965. Here's the rifle: Mark sends
mvmhm Posted June 8, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted June 8, 2017 Look how crisp that mum is! There was a fine layer of speckle rust on all the parts, but a wipe down with some gun oil cleaned it right off... Mark sends
mvmhm Posted June 8, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted June 8, 2017 ...and this 10-yen note was in his pants pocket.... Mark sends
sundance Posted June 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2017 Very nice. I love those type 99's. But for a sling it really has all the bells and whistles. Congrats.

sundance Posted June 10, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 10, 2017 Were there any other Japanese items other than the Type 99 and the bill? When I was a kid (years ago) a good friend's dad (former Marine) had a Japanese rifle in the attic. We would occasionally wander up there and play with it. He still has a ton of stuff to go through, but he also said he'd never seen anything other than the rifle... Mark sends
