If this is anything like "The War" and "The Civil War", it will be an excellent documentary.

I just watched a sneak preview (63min out of 18hr total time) our local library put on in conjunction with a panel discussion. The footage that I saw was excellent in terms of quality.

I think this show is going to do wonders for giving a voice to EVERYONE involved in the war on both sides.

I suspect also that there will be a generation of youg people asking grandma/granpa, dad/mom some questions that have never been asked before.

Saw "Deja Vu" > the 1st installation of the series this evening, and will watch the whole thing through to the last one.

Best I can say is that there is some new footage I'd not seen before, and was glad they at least made an effort to describe events in Vietnam which preceded us by many decades.

Mr. Burns has done a good job again. Being picky, the show mentioned our OSS guy jumping into the North to assist and care for " Uncle Ho", negelected to mention the jungle first aid roll that saved Ho's life.

BTW, dont bother even picking up the Newsweek rag on Vietnam, its a total joke. They claim the K Ration was developed for the USMC in RVN!!!! even have a pic of one of the camo box meals,LOL.

I have watched up till part 4 so far.

Its really good.

Seems like the down and dirty truth is being exposed here.

Plus the fragile human spirit being tested to the max.

Ken Burns is truly our country's story teller! Have watched every episode so far and learned a lot about Vietnam, it's history and how we got involved.

May the 58,000+ brave Americans who died in this dreadfully political endeavor Rest in Peace. Bob

Agree with Owen and Bob. Really puts the puzzle together. I always found when reading general histories of the VN war, getting bogged down with names, plots, factions. Burns so far really sums it up. After last nights episode, I do feel there is something being left out but there plenty of time left.

The series is promising footage that has never been seen before, and they are delivering.

On episode 4 which covered 1966, an interesting photo showed up about halfway through. It was part of the story of the South Vietnamese woman who worked for the Saigon government. She was recounting working on a RAND Corp. study interviewing prisoners asking them why they joined the Viet Cong. In the background are two Mike Force soldiers wearing Tiger Stripes. What is remarkable is one is wearing a skull and crossbones patch. The other is wearing a matching neck scarf, boldly showing the same design on the back.

When the DVD set comes out, this will be a frame worth looking up.

Ken Burns does do some great series. It is a very interesting series and educational. I will say I I like the series but it is Probably just my take on the series to me it seams the series is basically a account of how the US lost the war from day one and never had a chance nor had a battle victory during the early years of the war (I am up to 1966 in the series).Again just my overall feeling from the series and not meant to upset anybody.

Ken Burns should be embarrassed by this documentary. Firstly, it's all been covered before, historically. Plus, he used vets previously interviewed in Vietnam HD (which was a great documentary). Finally, I'll leave it up to you guys, but the NVA and American protesters looked like heroes. Lazy, lazy documentary.

If you want to see the best documentary, find 1983s PBS: Vietnam A Television History. The vet interviews and the historical agnostic viewpoint is well done.

this is all the same as previous VN war documentaries , just a few different people interviewed, same old news footage, rehash

Vietnam War in HD, Walter Cronkite, Vietnam the 10,0000 day War

What would have been brave(but it was predictable) is that they discussed the largest minority participation was the American Indian. And they mentioned this hero. https://www.army.mil/americanindians/poolaw.html

However, when they discussed Tiger Force(same episode), they did not mention this man. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Ybarra

Hello

I've been able to see it on a French channel : very good documentary

I always feel sad when i see how Vietnam war vets are under considered for their service, they deserve much respect for their part of this war (we also French had the same situation on "harsh war" in Indochina and Algeria)

Last summer back in my San Francisco and Los Angeles holidays i have been able to cross Vietnam war homeless, Some were also gone insane

Really from the bottom of my hearts it has hurt me a lot ...

Deep respect for all vets ... from all wars ... and god bless America (even if i'm not a US citizen, i feel like an American)

I've been a little disappointed in The Vietnam War. Not that it's bad -- it's just that it's been done many times and I haven't seen anything new (at least in the first two episodes). I just feel like I'm watching a generic Vietnam documentary on The History Channel.

One area where I had trouble following the logic: the US should have supported Ho Chi Minh right after World War 2 because he quoted the American founders and showed signs that he wasn't a die-hard communist. On the other hand, we were foolish to support Diem just because he told us he wanted to found a Western-style democracy. In both cases we were being told what we wanted to hear, but the implication is we should have believed one and not the other?
