WW2 knife pick up at the flea market

This is the first time I have come across one of these knives. I bought it for 10 dollars at the flea market today. My knowledge of these knives is limited but I believe they took surplus swords and cut them to the length of a knife and then added turned wooden furniture pieces as handles. Now that is the way to re-purpose stuff. I believe this was made from a German sword as it is marked, "W. CLAUBERG SOLINGEN". Wouldn't it be ironic if this was carried by a US infantrymen in Europe against the Germans who originally produced the sword.

Yes an import sword/blade possibly Civil War era cut down and made into a knife for WW2

The handle is well made and these are shown in one of Coles volumes on US MILITARY KNIVES

Besides MH Cole's book, Mike Silvey also has a color photo of a similar knife. Great pick up for $10. SKIP

I believe it was made from a Civil War sword blade imported from Germany. Looks like an 1840 Cavalry saber. It is in excellent condition, I have several of them.

It is a steal for $10, worth 15 - 20 times that!

I never have that kind of luck!

Great pick up. It looks awesome.

I only just learned of these conversions for the first time the other day, seeing an M-1913 Cavalry sabre that had been turned into a knife.

I checked my sword knives with a turned wood handle with flattened sides and found one marked in a very similar manner as yours.

I had to pay a lot more than $10 for mine.
