Good eye. It's indeed a birch upper. Oops. Just double checked. Not birch, just a light walnut. I'd still question whether or not this set ever left a govt arsenal as an m1a1. iron bender Posted June 3, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted June 3, 2017 Carbine collection to this point. All late obviously. I roll really slow on carbines because I rarely see carbines I like. I do know for fact I will not butcher a perfectly fine late 40's early 50's gov't refit. I've done this to a couple of carbines and the results are rarely good looking overall and it's costly with little to no return on the backside. It is fun to have the different ammo that goes with them as well as the launchers, bayonets, etc. While I have several boxes of the proof rounds I have not seen any of the elusive FA marked rounds. I intend to restore it simply because only 5 parts aren't correct (original stock and barrel!) And i really want to relieve it of its bayonet lug. I thought the same thing, and last year, I stumbled on a mostly original condition bringback.
