Hooah1002 Posted June 3, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 3, 2017 Purchased this WWI M1917 service tunic, supposedly unissued, unsure of its authenticity upon inspection. Wool has a slight sheen to it, doesn't have as tight a weave as the course wool we normally see on WWI uniforms. Buttons are original (The Art Metal Co. of Newark, NJ), but several were upside down. Two labels in it, can verify that there was a Levi & Rosenthal clothier in New York during WWI, but possible to reproduce labels. Tried to get some good photos, would appreciate any thoughts or if anyone has seen a WWI uniform like this.

littlewilly Posted June 3, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 3, 2017 Looks ok to me, too. I took a quick look at a bunch of my coats, and of the dozen or so I checked, found four with upside down buttons on them. No big deal. Back then the push was on to get the uniforms to the troops, and no time was wasted on checking button positions, I am sure. If the soldier could button things up, that was good enough. Hooah1002 Posted June 3, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted June 3, 2017 Thanks for the feedback. I am feeling a little better about it. The wool just did not look or feel like the other issued US M1917 tunics I have in my collection. The wool looks and feels more like the reproduction wool you find in German reproduction uniforms today.
