Hello. Not too up on civil war era items. Was wondering if anyone could I.d this type of jacket. It appears to be some type of musicians coat by the buttons. But also has naval buttons. Back marked m.c Lilly. Pics to follow. It's labeled civil war era. But again. I doubt it. Please see reply for more pics.

I don't know about the rest of the coat, but M.C. Lilly buttons are post Civil War.

It's a postwar coat for a band ca. 1870-1900. It is possible it was for bandsman in some state NG unit, but it is not unusual to see just about any bandsmen uniformed in quasi-military outfits. The mix of buttons is pretty common on a coat of the period- when one popped off and was lost another brass one was just as good.

Thanks. You can see the lining in this pic. Looks very similar to ng Coates of the indian war era in my opinion.

Yes, the linings are similar, but the same makers are supplying all sorts of uniforms to the US military, national guard, fraternal and masonic groups, firemen, bands, etc., so the type of lining will be very much at the desire of the customer and the lining used for a group of national guard coats might be the same as for some other group. The coat shown could be for a military bandsman, but without a marking, I think the only way to be sure would be to find some photographic evidence. Elrod's book on CW musical instruments has some photos of period bands and there are a number of post-Civil War US band photos in The Drums Would Roll. Langellier's Army Blue might also have some material. National Guard band photos would be more spread out but some Google image searches might be a start. There might be some descriptions in state uniform regulations, but since some regimental bands seem to have had their uniforms spiced up by purchases made from regimental funds the specific design might not show up in regulations.
