Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2017 Hey guys, this is my first jungle jacket and my first Vietnam made insignia so I want your opinions. The coat is a 4th pattern, ripstop with pocket drain holes and sleeve gussets, it has had epaulettes fabricated and sewn on. Who would need epaulettes? It has theater made name and US Army BOS tapes, and gosting of a large pocket patch, a Lieutenant and captains rank insignia, branch insignia, a shield shaped combat patch, and a small circle and a rounded rectangle unit patch. Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted May 31, 2017 Here's the name, I believe this is theater made in Vietnam, correct me if I'm wrong. Looks like it was sewn on by somebody not in full control of their sewing machine. I've found a few Vietnam Vets with this name but nothing definitive. If anybody could pin down who wore this that would be amazing.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted May 31, 2017 Here is the back of the name, looks like it's been on there for a long time.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted May 31, 2017 the US ARMY BOS tape looks theater made in Vietnam too. It's sewn on with the same thread.

Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted May 31, 2017 Here's the gosting of the pocket patch, it was sewn straight through the pocket, leaving it unusable. It's a strange shape, does anybody know what it was?
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted May 31, 2017 Here's the rear, looks like it was sewn on with the same or very similar tan thread that the nametapes and epaulettes are sewn on with.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted May 31, 2017 Here's the gosting of a lieutenant's bar. Clearly this is the rank the uniform had for most of it's use.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted May 31, 2017 And the rear, looks to me like the lieutenant's bar was on the uniform for most of it's use and then it was replaced with a captains rank. I compared the size of it to a captains rank stripped from a uniform and it's the same and I think I even see indentions where each of the bars were. Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted May 31, 2017 Left epaulette, any ideas what he would have needed epaulettes for?
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #13 Posted May 31, 2017 The only thing that worries me is that I think it was sewn with the same thread as the name and BOS tapes which makes me believe it was on the coat from the start but it doesn't have as much gosting as the pocket patch, circular unit insignia, branch insignia, or Lieutenants Bar. Perhaps because it is not sewn down on all sides it puckered up?

Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted May 31, 2017 Author Share #18 Posted May 31, 2017 Here's the ghosting of the unit patches, looks like it had a small circular patch for most of it's use but also had a rectangle/oval patch for a while, does anybody recognise the shapes? I just realised I have been spelling Ghost wrong this whole time. Do'h.

patches Posted June 1, 2017 Share #23 Posted June 1, 2017 Ghosting of patches seem to be the 1st Logistical Command with a Brigade patch, either the 199th or the 196th Infantry Brigades (when the 196th Inf Bde became a separate organization after 1971, prior to this it was initially a separate organization when it arrived in Vietnam in late 1966, but in late 1967 it became a part of the AMERICAL, the combat side, The AMERICAL. The Officers Branch of Service? My first guess, maybe Chemical Corps, will see. The Shoulder Loops? they were a some what common uniform embelisment among some officers, senior NCOs, sometimes others like, Army Military Police, USAF guys like Air Police. To Wit. An Obligated Officer Serving for a Specific Period of Active Duty, or a Volunteer Officer Serving for Specific Period of Active Duty. Can't find no more on him. BTW, we see no CIB, right! Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted June 1, 2017 Author Share #25 Posted June 1, 2017 Thanks! My searches only turned up a PVT. No CIB or any other qualifications were ever attached, not even pin holes.
