I picked up this cover today and need some info. Can any of you please identify the Marine unit that used this unis mark. It looks like "512" to me.

Thanks a bunch.

Ronnie

Hi Ronnie - Nice cover! "512" would be A Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment. Obviously 4th Marine Division. Kudos.

Thank you very much Blacksmith. Does this mean that this cover was actually used during a campaign?

I appreciate your help.

Hi Ronnie - you are more than welcome. As UNIS was designed specifically to hamper Japanese attempts to identify Marine units, I think that's a safe assumption. My guess would be Iwo, as I don't recall seeing UNIS-marked gear or uniforms on Tinian or prior.

If you look closely inside and on back of the cover, using an infrared light source if possible, you may be able to find a name / laundry stamp. About half of the USMC covers I see are named. As you know his unit, it might be possible to ID the Marine that carried this cover. Good luck!
