stealthytyler Posted May 25, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 25, 2017 What is the best way to preserve a helmet like this that is rusty? Will the rust continue to grow? Or will it only grow when in a moist environment?
navyfamily Posted May 25, 2017 Share #6 Posted May 25, 2017 What is the best way to preserve a helmet like this that is rusty? Will the rust continue to grow? Or will it only grow when in a moist environment? As long as it isn't exposed to anymore moisture it should be fine, humidity could be a problem but unless you're storing it in a dark and damp basement it shouldn't rust anymore. MattS Posted June 15, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 15, 2017 I haven't been to Fayetteville since I left Bragg in 94, but if I get down there I will stop in!
milcollector Posted June 16, 2017 Share #10 Posted June 16, 2017 Nice looking helmet with early liner. I thought Navy helmets were gray. Were the helmets also left green when used on the ships. Or was this for someone who went ashore? David

USARV72 Posted June 20, 2017 Share #14 Posted June 20, 2017 The North Carolina used to have compartments full of good WWII gear. One can draw their own conclusions of what happened to it. BTW, it very haunted, ask a Boy Scout that spent the night on her in the 60's.
Mustang Posted June 20, 2017 Share #15 Posted June 20, 2017 Was that WW2 gear stored or displayed? Also, were you a Boy Scout who spent the night aboard?Would like to hear about the ghosts.
USARV72 Posted June 20, 2017 Share #16 Posted June 20, 2017 Gear was misstored in un climate controlled compartments, lots and lots of it. Seems the management over the years simply ignored the value and importance of what was rotting away below deck. Display are is limited onboard, however selling off the excess would have raised much needed cash to maintain her. Sold them some items for the ships store back in the early 90's, asked about the gear stored below, they down right indignant when the subject came up. Since then re enactors have been onboard, and there used to be a regular group that portrayed the ships crew for special events. Ed most likely knows the current situation or someone else on the forum? Pmed you re: the "haints"
warpath Posted June 22, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted June 22, 2017 WOW.......................I do not remember seeing these on board. Are these helmets in an off limits area on the USS North Carolina? These helmets were stored in an area not open to the public. There are quite a few on board most of which have Hawley liners.

Or was this for someone who went ashore? David . Navy helmets were issued to the ships as they cameboff the assembly line. Standard OD green just like everyone else. They got painted by Local Control. Meaning that if someone in authority wanted them painted, they got painted. Usually done as busy work or as extra duty punishment. Generally, no one bothered until they got really rusty or beat up.
