navyfamily Posted May 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2017 Hello all! I recently received a postwar M1 helmet shell that I bought for $10. When it arrived today I of course performed my usual ritual of checking the stamp. I did my own research on the forum and discovered it is an RJ Stampings helmet. The heat stamp number is 701. Common sense would dictate that the lower the heat stamp number the earlier production. So my question is do I have a post Vietnam helmet or a helmet that I could use with my Mitchell cover and p64 liner? It didn't come with chin straps so I have no way of identifying it that way. Before I received this shell I was using a McCord Korea era shell in the darker green which I thought was acceptable because of how things get reissued. So should I go back to my Korea shell or stay with the 701 heat lot number RJ Stampimgs. It may seem silly fussing over a minor detail like this but I want to make sure everything I have is period correct. -Duncan

navyfamily Posted May 24, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted May 24, 2017 Agree, I would stay with the Korean War period helmet. Larry Personally I'd stay with the Korean War helmet Thanks guys! I did happen upon some interesting discoveries though, there are trace of red oxide primer on the chinstrap bails and how the paint is scratched off on the bails is consistent with attachment points on Vietnam chinstraps so...I might change back to Korea shell but I don't feel that uncomfortable using the RJ Stampings shell. Besides that, I plan on using the Korea shell for a early Vietnam helmet, if only i could source a nice P55 liner...

Evan Funny enough an hour after I posted that I found a reasonably inexpensive P55. Thanks for the offer though!
