mikedon Posted May 22, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2017 I visit a WWII practice bombing range in North Texas every year to hunt prairie dogs. I usually just pick up .50 BMG bullets and cases. This year I picked up some bomb fragments, I think. Can anyone identify this? They are all over the place along with shrapnel, bomb fins, etc.. It looks burnt on one end, no markings that I can see. It also looks like the 6 sided hollow longer piece was removable.

Taber10 Posted May 22, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2017 Perhaps remains of a four pound incendiary bomb? The hex cover acted as a "fin" on the bomb's descent; it activated on impact and the "business end" has burned away as designed. I'm not really an "expert" on these as they were out of the inventory before I came into the Air Force.
mikedon Posted May 22, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted May 22, 2017 You are right! I looked it up on the internet and that is exactly what it is. Thanks! That has been puzzling me for years.
