268th C.A. Posted May 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 13, 2017 I don't consider myself an expert, but I do pick up wings, I don't like this one, it looks cast too me. I'd say repro. But let others give an opnion here. I'd like to see what others think....
Kimo Posted May 13, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 13, 2017 When I look closely at the photo I am seeing a great many tiny bubbles and holes in the metal - making it look quite porous. Also, that spot in the center of the back of the shield appears to be where a sprue was cut off. A sprue is the small channel where the molten metal comes into the wing shaped hollow in the sand when it is cast. That says the metal was sand cast and not die struck like a coin. Sand casting is one of the most crude ways to create a fake badge. The real ones were die struck.
Flightpath Posted May 13, 2017 Share #4 Posted May 13, 2017 Those tiny wing weevils strike again, luckily they only bore into fake wings! Yes, they are cast and not struck (stamped).
LuftStalg1 Posted May 13, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 13, 2017 Yup, when you don't do your casting under a vacuum you get bubbles! : (
