SEABEE SON Posted May 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2017 I would appreciate opinions and knowledge regarding this unusual helmet I just picked up. I was told it was a Seabee helmet, but there is nothing to substantiate that. There is a name written lightly in pencil inside the helmet, but it is nearly illegible. Are the circles gas detection paint? Note the number on the back. The paint appears to be Navy grey. It is quite worn. Is this a McCord helmet? If so, what date does the heat stamp signify? Thanks, Scott

ken88 Posted May 13, 2017 Share #13 Posted May 13, 2017 Helmets like this one have been discussed... see: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/241770-usn-seabee-helmet/ Some opinions: coast guard, shore patrol, medic, etc.
SEABEE SON Posted May 13, 2017 Author Share #14 Posted May 13, 2017 One of the helmets on one of those threads is a Coast Guard Aviation Machinists Mate helmet. That might explain the 'AMM' that seems to be written inside the helmet.

SEABEE SON Posted May 13, 2017 Author Share #16 Posted May 13, 2017 I think it might be similar to this one: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/95481-m-1-yellow-dot-uscg-helmet/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

stealthytyler Posted May 13, 2017 Share #18 Posted May 13, 2017 Those circles could be pacific shore party but the number on the back makes me think it was used aboard ship.

dskjl Posted May 14, 2017 Share #20 Posted May 14, 2017 i too have one of these yellow circle lids and mine came from a local collector who pulled 4 of them of an old base in the Aleutians. I don't think we can know for sure but the museum folks in Unalaska were pretty confident mine was WWII USCG Shore Party which is consistent with a lot of the forum feedback. Nice find. SEABEE SON Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #21 Posted May 14, 2017 I think it is interesting that Dwight's and mine have the same early heat stamp, 56C. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Phineaus Posted May 16, 2017 Share #22 Posted May 16, 2017 This lid was previously in my collection. I originally picked it up at the SOS and I sold it a couple at years ago. It's a nice salty one. The yellow circles have been seen on both coast guard and Seabee helmets, but there was similar conjecture on another forum that it may be shore party helmet as well. SEABEE SON Posted May 16, 2017 Author Share #23 Posted May 16, 2017 Thanks for the background info. I've also understood that it could be a shore party helmet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
SEABEE SON Posted June 6, 2017 Author Share #24 Posted June 6, 2017 Here is some period USCG color footage from the Normandy invasion, with what appears to be a similar helmet with markings on the sides. Can't tell for sure if they are yellow circles or not, however. Looks to be a medic from the armband. Here is the video:
