Relief Tube Funnel

Relief tube funnel for pressurized aircraft. I understand that there was also a heated funnel for use on high altitude, unheated aircraft in order to prevent a situation worse than the legendary tongue on flagpole.

View of the other side. The lever is used to open the valve so fluid can flow overboard. Note that the manufacturer is Air Associates which manufactured a great variety of aircraft equipment.

Now that you don't see Every day... I recall a P-38 pilot's account that asked his crew chief to make a bigger rear facing scoop to increase relief tube suction because it would dribble everywhere... Chief complied... Next mission he asks the pilot how it went, and the pilot replied that he had better make the scoop smaller because it almost ripped him out of the plane!

That's a piece of militaria you don't see everyday! From an interview with a ball turret gunner friend of mine:

“One of the hazards in a ball turret was from gunners peeing in their pants. We used a fuse can to urinate in and dump it out the chute. When we crashed the plane in February, I stole the relief tube out of the bomb bay and I carried it with me. You could always tell when Burke was going because there would be two feet of hose sticking out of the ball turret! But there were two ball turret guys that had to go in their pants and they sat in the ice for four or five hours and they got gangrene.”

Then their was the the Mustang pilot who had the bright idea to tape it on. Froze himself to the tube and the swelling was an issue after all that time in cold high altitude!

  • 1 month later...

I flew the Boeing CH-47 A & B for models a while and I thought it was rather amusing that they put relief tubes under each pilots seat as we would be sucking fumes at about 2 hours.

I have a couple of balealite tubs from WW2. I was going g to hook one up to my truck so I wouldn't have to make it stops. Ended up using a monster can with a screw top.
