This set came in this morning...Major Chambers graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1970, flying C-130s. Between 1985 and 1990, he part of the 16th SOS at Hurlburt AFB. His aircraft's call sign was Spirit 03..he took part in Operation URGENT FURY in December 1989, and retired in July 1990. His friend and Co-pilot moved up to become the aircraft commander of Spirit 03. The 16th SOS and Spirit 03 deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM; on the morning of 31 January 1991, Spirit 03 was flying in support of the Marines under attack by the Iraqis in the Saudi village of Khafji. Just as the plane was departing the battle due to low fuel, it was hit by an Iraqi shoulder fired surface to air missile. The crew could be heard calling "Mayday" just before the plane crashed into the Persian Gulf. There were no survivors. That haunted Robert for the rest of his life. His widow still has more to go through, but she's bringing in his flight suit(s) for sure....

Here's Toni with her husband's Cold War Certificate and commemorative medal. He hated that most museums don't have anything from the Cold War, and when she saw our display case and uniforms it convinced her that this was the home for her husband's artifacts.

Toni also brought in a nice 8X10 photo of her mother-in-law, who served in the WAVES in WWII; she was in the first class of WAVES to be trained as Radioman's Mates. The picture is accompanied by a newspaper article and her discharge docos (not shown)

Patchcollector

I remember hearing about the tragic loss of Spirit 03.The theory was that they stayed in the area too long, the sun came up and they were shot down.Rest in Peace Heroes.
