Rifleman Posted May 2, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 2, 2017 A friend of mine passed away last year.He retired years ago from the NSWC in Dahlgren VA.Cleaning out one of his sheds we found this fuze. It's 7 1/2 inches long and 2 3/8 inches at it's widest point. The bottom diameter is 1 3/4 inches.Anybody know what it fit or the time period? pzjgr Posted May 2, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 2, 2017 It is a VT fuze (Variable Timed) or Proximity Fuze...I would guess Navy from where he worked, and looking at the shape, I would guess for the 3" 50cal gun.... A very nice piece, as you don't find cut away VT fuzes often....The long part is essentially a battery that starts upon firing, which powers essentially a miniature radar set up...the fuze knows when it is approaching the target, and when it gets to a certain distance, detonates the projectile. It was a real war winner for the US, allowed much better AA action than the usual timed fuzes...Eastman Kodak made them along with some other companies, super top secret during the war... Probably the 50's and 60's, maybe the 40's....I'd have to look in some references to get more detailed...
