AirMechanic Posted April 26, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 26, 2017 I recently acquired this grenade that I thought was rather interesting. I never seen a pineapple grenade with a large flat base like this one has. There are no markings on the body of the grenade, and it just looks and feels like it has some age to it. Neither end is threaded for a fuse either. The body of the grenade also looks like it was cast in two pieces, as there is a seam, and the sides are not quite even. I suspect this may just be a paperweight of some sort due to the wide flat bottom or even a practice grenade, but I really don't know. Any thoughts? pzjgr Posted April 27, 2017 Share #6 Posted April 27, 2017 My guess is some sort of commercial casting/paperweight/novelty....the shape is definitely early with that very round shoulder...but the flat base and big casting seam scream commercial. thorin6 Posted April 28, 2017 Share #7 Posted April 28, 2017 Looks like the start of a lighter made to look like a grenade.
AirMechanic Posted April 28, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted April 28, 2017 I'll try to post some measurements soon. While it seems very likely that the large flat base was intentionally made like that to serve a specific purpose (for stability as a paperweight or perhaps a lighter), is it possible that the flat base was part of the casting process and would be cut off later? doyler Posted April 28, 2017 Share #9 Posted April 28, 2017 Heres a casting I found that wasnt finnished. The bottom appears to have been milled smooth. The top is threaded for the fuze I thinking if the bottom flange was cut of of the casting te hole woud be quite large? Also the top opening on yours looks over sized.(to me)? USARV72 Posted April 28, 2017 Share #10 Posted April 28, 2017 Looking at the body with 3 grooves, seems to be Mk I. Base is another question. Brits had a screw on flat " washer type" base to use theirs in a launcher.
