WWII Dog Tag question

Hello all,

I was recently sorting through some old keepsake items and found a WWII dog tag that my great uncle Harold gave me when I was a kid. Since the internet wasn't really a thing that long ago, I decided to see if I could find his service record. While I did find that, I noticed something that seemed a bit off with the dog tag itself. The notch on this tag is on the bottom right instead of the top left (see pic).

The info on that tag is very worn so its not like he had a replica made just to send me, so I guess I'm confused. Do errors on these sometimes occur?

Can the experts on this forum help shed some light? Appreciate any help.

Thanks.

No problem! Were you ever able to piece together any of his service history?

I was able to find a high level service record on NARA, which is more detailed than I already had. I have some letters from him as well, but plan to reach out to some relatives for more info. I used to spend a lot of time with him when I was a kid, but unfortunately I don't have a very good memory and can't recall a lot.

I also thought about sending in an official service history request to the gov but assume that is hit and miss and might take a while.
