rldarmstr Posted April 26, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 26, 2017 There is an inert grenade for sale that I may be interested in but I am unfamiliar with the description and would appreciate any enlightenment. The grenade itself is a solid bottom MKII. The description, in part, states: "This is a RARE variety with the LONG firing pin spring pin that is only found on EARLY WWII Grenades." I have a modest grenade collection and I have read many articles (books and internet) but have not heard of a "long firing pin spring pin" before. Is this a valid feature or concern? tommatt3 Posted April 27, 2017 Share #2 Posted April 27, 2017 "Firing pin spring" sounds like a Mills bomb part. The only spring in a U.S. Mk II is the striker spring. I am not an expert on grenades, but I am not aware of 'long' and 'short' striker springs in a Mk II.
rldarmstr Posted April 28, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted April 28, 2017 Thanks....I agree but I wanted some support to be sure. I never heard of such a part either.
rldarmstr Posted May 4, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted May 4, 2017 Well the grenade sold and I wasn't one of the bidders. It went for way more than I would have valued it at. The fuse was listed as M10A1 which I realize is the recalled fuse and has a certain rarity assigned to it but even so the sale price seems beyond that value to me. Nice grenade but not $400+ worth of nice. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/640407835

I have seen nicer ones sell or offered on the forum for less.
Dirt Detective Posted May 4, 2017 Share #6 Posted May 4, 2017 http://www.inert-ord.net/usa03a/usa2/mk2sp/index.html The only thing I see is the hammer / striker pivot pin being the modified longer type...Check the inert ord page and it covers why it was used. Its a later mod..not earlier. It claimed to have a M10A1 spoon..but it does not show a picture..that would be the rare item in this auction and dont understand why there would not be a pic of it. rldarmstr Posted May 5, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted May 5, 2017 DD, Thanks, I know that page but I had forgotten about it. Wish I'd read that before my initial post. There is something else that caught my eye on the Inert-Ord page; the description of the RFX grenades and the idea that Richmond Foundry never produced RFX stamped HE grenades. Here's a link to a BOCN posting that would seem to dispute the idea http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/85659-Finally-Found-One-The-Holy-Grail-WW2-US-Pineapple-RFX
