beerdragon54 Posted April 25, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 25, 2017 I just got this home from the antique shop. The dealer didn't notice the ship name or significance so I got a good deal. Not sure what the colors significance means. I usually don't buy ammo boxes just because of the real estate they take up. Thoughts? Sgt. BARney Posted April 25, 2017 Share #3 Posted April 25, 2017 The green on yellow stripe indicates the box contained tracer ammo. The stenciling will usually say what type ammo is in the box also, unless it has been painted over. These boxes do take up a lot of real estate, but I tell the wife they are great for storage of my other militaria!!!
Sgt. BARney Posted April 25, 2017 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2017 Did your box come with a lid? Most I have seen do not have the lid. The lids were held on with 6 unusual wing-nuts, which are even harder to find. The ammo was packed in a sheet metal box, which was soldered shut, and this metal box was contained in the wood crate. I have seen very few which still have the sheet metal box inside. BTW, nice find!
