aerialbridge Posted April 22, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 22, 2017 Closed at $248, with at least 2 bidders valuing it right about there. And the winner seems to have really wanted it and doubled down with two higher bids that weren't reached. Serv # 291 30 25, James Forrest Johnson detached as Quartermaster 1c from the Clemson-class Asiatic destroyer Parrott in 9/39, and so would have qualified for a China Service medal, but the seller only listed the GCM and no other medals. He was on the North Carolina from 4/41 to 3/43, advanced to CPO during that time, and on the Oceanus after that advanced to Boatswain warrant officer eff. 6/43. And that's the last muster roll since he's a warrant officer. Didn't find anything interesting Googling his name-- so what was the attraction for this single GCM, presumably based on the service history? Not a Pearl Harbor survivor, not a sub, not a KIA, not an NAP. Am I underestimating the premium for his Asiatic service and the fact he would have qualified for the original China Service, and possibly a Yangtze since he was born in 1911 and could have been Asiatic for going on a decade? Still seems like a lot for a singleton IMO. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Navy-Good-Conduct-Medal-Named-James-Forest-Johnson-1941-/162402960565?hash=item25cff884b5:g:2-YAAOSw4A5Yq1vb Find a grave- https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=74338175&ref=acom

268th C.A. Posted April 22, 2017 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2017 My guess would be the North Carolina attachment. Some of these old Battle ships are still around and open to the public for tours. The people who are associated with them are dedictated to the history of not only the ship, but the Sailors who served her. I'd say it went to just such a collector/historian. In a rare occasion a family member would consider it priceless.

irish Posted April 22, 2017 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2017 I imagine the Yangtze River connection has a collecting group.
Wharfmaster Posted April 22, 2017 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2017 Perhaps someone needed it to restore a group. Wharf
themick Posted April 22, 2017 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2017 Perhaps the recipient of the medal was a relative of the buyer. Steve
