gap Posted April 18, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2017 I recently picked up a Hawaiian Department patch that appears to be German made with the characteristic salt n pepper weave. Why would this patch exist? I thought this unit was disbanded shortly after the war.
doyler Posted April 18, 2017 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2017 Former war time service patch made by a vet when later in Germany? Many possibilities There was a collection here once purchased from an officer. He was in Europe then Japan. When in Germany at wars end he sought out a tailor and provided the tailor with a copy of the National Geographic issue with shoulder patches. He had every patch shown made in bullion.Much of the bullion work is like seen on SS collar tabs and insignias. Why would the vet do this? Was he a collector? Did he just want a example of the major units for a display when returning home? Who knows. Many reasons are lost to time.Im not sure even the buyer asked the vet I know the individual who bought the vets collection.I was never able to see it but was told it was sold several years ago and recall it was at or during one of the Max shows. Teamski Posted April 18, 2017 Share #3 Posted April 18, 2017 Exactly the case. A ton of patches were made for use as combat patches. This is why you see a German made 2nd Cav Division and a host of Pacific campaign units. Whatever the GI would buy, the Germans made. -Ski
Bill Scott Posted April 18, 2017 Share #4 Posted April 18, 2017 Doyler I think I owned that collection and you are right the quality was the same as the work on high quality SS cuff Titles. If it is the same collection there were over 200 pieces and it was like looking at the National Geographic magazine in 3D.Scotty PS thanks for a great memory.
