BBG Posted April 14, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2017 Hello everyone, This airship wing is not tarnished. It's bronze or brass that’s been painted dark brown. The same brown paint used on WW1-WW2 US insignia. I’m sure it’s die-struck. I can’t see any silver plating under the paint. It looks like it was originally produced this way. The back pin is missing and it looks like someone filed the catch and hinge off. It might have been on a display board at some point. Somewhere I have a small (1.5”) US pilot wing that’s dark brown also, but I’ve never seen a full-size wing like this. Is this possibly a prototype or a pilot’s special order? LuftStalg1 Posted April 15, 2017 Share #5 Posted April 15, 2017 They sure did not do any damage to the surrounding area when the hing and catch were removed! Is the recessed spot ground out or natural? Would it be rejected if the die wan't completely filled leaving that spot?
BBG Posted April 15, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted April 15, 2017 The recessed spot or dimple is part of the die. It appears on other Link airship wings I've seen.
pfrost Posted April 17, 2017 Share #7 Posted April 17, 2017 There are some of those with the indent, some without. Mine doesn't have the indent. Nice wings, to bad they mucked up the one.
LuftStalg1 Posted April 18, 2017 Share #8 Posted April 18, 2017 Would you say they were actually "painted" by an individual or is it the same treatment other insignia get? I get why someone would remove the fittings, not that I agree with that, but it also seems that it was colored AFTER the fittings were removed. Any guess' why? BBG Posted April 19, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted April 19, 2017 I'm pretty sure these were painted with the fittings in place. The left side still has a small stump were the back pin was filed down and is now tarnished.
