Bob Hudson Posted April 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2017 These are part of a group of slides taken on Fire Island in Alaska in 1954-55. This US AIR FORCE base was an air defense radar center and Nike surface-to-air missile site for NORAD, but it looks like these airman also spent time prepping for a Soviet ground assault with some 50-cal machine gun training. 12thengr Posted April 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2017 Looks like a couple of Browning Auto Rifles ready for the next phase of 'training.'
flyboy53 Posted April 14, 2017 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2017 Fire Island was a Ground Control Intercept air defense radar site south of Elmendorf AFB, Alaskan Air Command.
Bob Hudson Posted April 14, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted April 14, 2017 Fire Island was a Ground Control Intercept air defense radar site south of Elmendorf AFB, Alaskan Air Command. I have dozens more slides of the Fire Island base, including aerial shots of Elmendorf and Anchorage. It appears they may ave had a fdlying club on base with an Aeronca aircraft. Bob Hudson Posted April 14, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted April 14, 2017 It must have been fun to fire the 50-cal - a nice change from looking at blips on radar screens.

Bob Hudson Posted April 14, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted April 14, 2017 Great pics.. Those are Kodachrome slides: I just laid them on light table and photographed them with my iPhone 7 - it's many times faster than scanning them (albeit they don't have scanner quality).
