USAF cold warriors firing 50 cal MG in Alaska circa 1955

These are part of a group of slides taken on Fire Island in Alaska in 1954-55. This US AIR FORCE base was an air defense radar center and Nike surface-to-air missile site for NORAD, but it looks like these airman also spent time prepping for a Soviet ground assault with some 50-cal machine gun training.

Fire Island was a Ground Control Intercept air defense radar site south of Elmendorf AFB, Alaskan Air Command.

 

I have dozens more slides of the Fire Island base, including aerial shots of Elmendorf and Anchorage. It appears they may ave had a fdlying club on base with an Aeronca aircraft.

It must have been fun to fire the 50-cal - a nice change from looking at blips on radar screens.

Great pics..

 

Those are Kodachrome slides: I just laid them on light table and photographed them with my iPhone 7 - it's many times faster than scanning them (albeit they don't have scanner quality).
