mvmhm Posted April 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2017 A friend who works at a local thrift store found us a treasure trove of U.S. flags to use for Flag Stars, along with the personal Command flags of Major General (then Lieutenant General) Cochran. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Ohio Air National Guard during the Cold War, but began his military career in World War II. He started as a co-pilot of a B-25 Mitchell bomber, and then transitioned to fighters, flying the P-51 Mustang in North Africa and Italy. At the time of his retirement, he was the last WWII fighter pilot still on active duty and flying fighters. The fags are in the original shipping box with all the packing materials, as well as the two flagpoles and toppers. MG Cochran was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight Air Medals. mvmhm Posted April 13, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted April 13, 2017 ..and the pole topper. I forgot to mention, the store was planning to send all of these to a local VFW for burning, but Brent convinced them to donate them instead...
mvmhm Posted April 13, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted April 13, 2017 Also included was this flag. I thought it was a burial flag but it's an interment-sized flag that was possibly sent to a Sergeant who served in Operation DESERT STORM. Barely legible on the glass was grease marker with "Operation DESERT STORM, Sgt Bryan K. RXXXX (I redacted the name), 1990-1991"
mvmhm Posted April 13, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted April 13, 2017 I hate when people do this...it's the "quick and easy" way to make a flag look like it's properly folded. The back of the case was stapled shut, so the recipient likely didn't know about it.
mvmhm Posted April 13, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted April 13, 2017 Sadly, there were five actual interment flags in the lot...and no names to go with them. As my Mother-In-Law says, "It is what it is..." Mark sends
