Is this a U.S. military medal?

It is a Butler Medal. Originals were made by Tiffany. But, possibly they restruck them?? But, I'm out of my area of expertise here.

I would think if it was an original, being sterling, it would have tarnished a lot by now!? Even just sitting in a drawer somewhere. Still has the original finish so it has never been cleaned.

I'm also no expert however i did a little research a long while ago: this one isn't from the original dies. There should be the engraver's name, Anthony Paquet, at the position indicated in the attached screen capture; he engraved the Medal of Honor dies. The format would have been as shown in the Medal of Honor inset.

I'd say its a collector's or re-enactor's restrike (but Tiffany?): the letters in "US Colored Troops" are all over the map.

.

Thanks for the replies. If smell is any indication of age, the case is outside now with a terrible, over-powering musty smell. I am attaching 2 pictures of the case. Again, thanks.

interesting seems crude for a stamp. But really get it checked out...the one on the site does not mention Tiffineys. Maybe someone has one of the reproductions and can look for the stamp and the box. You could call the company too of the reporduction.
