US Navy Corduroy flight helmet

Here is a little more unusual flying helmet made of corduroy. I believe these were pre or early war helmets made by the Navy and are stamped USN. Does anyone have any more information on these helmets?

This one belonged to an aerial gunner who served on the USS Suwannee and the USS White Plains.

Hi.

No, this helmet is not rigger made. It is converted for flying by rigger - ear cups added and keepr goggle/earphones cord at back...

Here is another example of Corduroy helmet converted for flying - photo is from almost 10 years ago from old Texas collector auction.

Another one is now for sale at Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-RARE-USN-Bedford-Cord-Flying-Helmet-w-Pre-WWII-Headphone-Wiring-Loom/192133651344?_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985&_trkparms=aid%3D777003%26algo%3DDISCL.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D42818%26meid%3D131319e9732b4dd38d5c81a9a2626831%26pid%3D100012%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D292037472230

The best regards,

Jerry

Ok. I said that because the seams are all over the place. But it is a N-1 winter hat that was converted to a flying helmet, right? (that's what it looks like to me).

Hi.

No, it is not N-1 winter hat convert for flying... probably private purchase flying helmet, but most of example have a USN stamp over a chin strap soo it could be Navy issued in pre, early war. Jon example have also a early war brown ear cups.

The best regards,

Jerry
