Dog Tag of 82nd Division Commander & First American Shot of WWI

This veteran was the commanding general of the 82nd Division in WWI during the St. Mihiel Offensive and the start of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is credited with America's first shot of WWI and with christening the 82nd Division as the "All-American Division."

The tag is marked with his rank of Brigadier General, so this tag would have been issued sometime between August 1917 and April 1918. Furthermore, he took command of the 82nd Division (Reverse of tag marked 82nd) in December of 1917, so the tag dates between December 1917 and April 1918, when he was promoted to Major General.
