USdog Posted April 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2017 Hi all, Got this tag in a trade recently and wanted to share. This one was also found on Guadalcanal. Marine was drafted and thus the rare "SS" designation on his tag for Selective Service. I found it interesting how a drafted marine ended up in the Marine Raiders?!? Anyways, he was in the 4th Marine Raider Battalion before getting placed into 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines when the Raiders were broken up. On L-Day of Guam invasion, he was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for his actions. See below. A true hero, RIP. The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class --------- (MCSN: 864714), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Islands, on 21 July 1944. Although seriously wounded by enemy mortar fire while stationed at the farthest advance of his platoon, Private First Class ------- refused to move to the rear for medical attention and, steadfastly remaining in his strategic position, courageously delivered accurate, extremely effective fire in the face of desperate, suicidal hostile counterattacks until he was mortally wounded. Private First Class ------- indomitable fighting spirit and great personal valor were an inspiration to the men of his unit and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. http://valor.militarytimes.com/recipient.php?recipientid=37857 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
