VC-84 | USS Makin Island (CVE-93)

Established 6 Jan 1944. Disestablished 17 Sep 1945

Deployed on the USS Makin Island (CVE-93) 10 Nov 1944 - 5 Jun 1945

Action included combat air patrol and anti-submarine patrol and close air support (bombing, strafing, napalming specific targets on the ground) during battles at Luzon, Leyte, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. FM-2 Wildcat and TBM-3 Avenger

This patch (decal on 6" leather round) was included in an IDed grouping I was fortunate to acquire some years ago.

I remember the binocs as a kid. Wish I knew where they got too! I’ve got a piece of a zero wing that my dad cut out on Okinawa. I’ve posted it on the VC-84 grouping that JDK has. All the best, Brian

Resurrecting this thread, as I have just come upon this, attached to VC-84.  Trying to find some more information.  I apologize for any "hi-jacking".  Thanks!

World is small. My friend has a grouping included a medals named to Glenn F. Cota which was also in VC-84. He is visible on the roster as well.

I really enjoy reading VC84 info. My grandfather flew a FM2 Wildcat in VC84. Boru and myself have chatted on the phone. His dad and my grandfather flew some missions together. I was able to track my grandfathers steps from when he joined to when he was discharged. Anyone with any good info please share, thank you.

Sadly all three of these men were killed on April 28, 1945 along with Makin Island photographer H Marshall Hansen.

Donald Glasgow was the TBM pilot. Standing in the picture.

George Douvos was the turret gunner. Standing on the wing.

Glenn Cota was the radioman. Kneeling on the wing.

VC-84 took part in their very last mission in combat on April 28, 1945 during the Okinawa campaign. They participated in strikes on Miyako Jima and Sakishima Gunto.

Boru's dad participated in the first support flight in a FM-2 along with Glasgow's TBM crew. My grandfather flying a FM-2 participated in the 3rd and final support flight.

The Aircraft Action Report describes the TBM crash. When I first discovered these facts it really hit home how close these four men were from making it home and possibly living a long life.

April 28th was the last time VC-84 saw combat as a unit. Very next day, April 29th 1945, VC-84 transferred over to the USS Savo Island and VC-91 would come aboard the USS Makin Island. At 1134 am the USS Savo Island departed the Okinawa combat area with VC-84 and started for home.

My grandfather does show in his logbook he flew LCAP duties for 3.6 hours on April 30th off of the Savo Island.

I have a Philippines Peso that my grandfather brought home from the war. It has a lot of the pilots from VC-84 signatures on it, including Donald Glasgow's. I found Don's brother 15 or so years ago and reached out to him. He was happy to hear from me and wanted to see pictures of his brothers signature. I sent him a few copies.  It meant a lot to him.

To all the men who fought during WWII, thank you for your sacrifice.

Thanks a lot for this story!

Can you show a photo of this Philippines Peso? They were also given to aviation personel as a emergency notes in special purses.

Take care,

Jerry
